Holiday apartment in the Murg valley
The Murg valley climbs from Rastatt to Baiersbronn and narrows as it goes. This is the valley of the log drivers — timber from these slopes went down the Murg and the Rhine as far as Holland.
Worth knowing
- Forbach's covered wooden bridge of 1778 spans 37 m, among the largest in Europe
- The Murg valley railway has run since 1869, linking Rastatt with Freudenstadt
- Until the 19th century this was the centre of the timber rafting trade, reaching the Netherlands
- Several roads climb directly from Forbach onto the ridge road
Best for: A quiet valley base with quick access to the ridge.

Common questions
- Is the Murg valley good for walking?
- Particularly, because the height difference is tangible: 200 m on the valley floor, 900 m on the ridge. If you would rather not climb, the Murgleiter path follows the river.
- Can you get here without a car?
- The Murg valley railway runs from Rastatt and Karlsruhe through to Freudenstadt and stops in every valley town. For the ridge you then need the bus or your legs.
- What is possible in winter?
- Little snow in the valley, reliable snow on the ridge road. The trails at Ruhestein and Mehliskopf are half an hour from the valley floor.
